The working group Modernity and Islam is a research network of Berlin universities and extra-university institutions committed to promoting a deeper understanding of Muslim societies, their culture, history, social and political order. Every year, a group of doctoral and post-doctoral students engaged in innovative research are invited to participate in an
INTERNATIONAL SUMMER ACADEMY
In a multidisciplinary exchange between the humanities and the social sciences, supervised by a group of internationally renowned tutors from various disciplines, they are given an opportunity to present their projects and to discuss new research as well as issues of theory and methodology relevant to their field of study. Participants receive a stipend covering travel and accommodation expenses. The next summer academy under the title of
HISTORY AND HISTORIOGRAPHY: NEW APPROACHES AND PERSPECTIVES
will be held in Berlin from 18-29 September, 2000 under the direction of Professor Gudrun Krämer (Institute of Islamic Studies at the Free University of Berlin).
Research focussing on aspects of economic, social and legal history will be especially encouraged. Projects may approach the subject from a quantitative or a qualitative perspective, and may cover all geographical areas of the Muslim world. The study of the history and historiography of Muslim societies should contribute to a greater awareness of their complexity, offering deeper insights into the phenomena of ‘modernity’ and ‘modernization’ which should be of interest to scholars well beyond the fields of Islamic and/or the respective area studies.
CONDITIONS OF APPLICATION
The programme addresses itself to doctoral and postdoctoral students of Islamic as well as relevant area studies, history, anthropology, law and social science irrespective of their country of citizenship. Islamicists and area specialists should be familiar with the working methods of historical research, whereas candidates from other disciplines must possess adequate knowledge of the relevant languages and experience in the field. The working language of the summer academy is English. The application, consisting of a curriculum vitae, a five-page outline of the current project plus a one-page summary, and two letters of recommendation from university professors, should be submitted, in
English, by 15 January, 2000 to:
