The Michigan State University Medieval and Renaissance Consortium is sponsoring a session entitled Performative Medicine at the Thirty-fifth International Congress on Medieval Studies, May 4-7, 2000 in Kalamazoo, MI. This session will explore the impact of descriptions and depictions of medical treatment as it is administered to the body, examining the ways that attempts to record the interactions between patient and caregiver portray the dynamics of healing in popular literature and medical texts. Topics might address the roles attributed to those involved in accounts of healings and miracles, images and stories of saints' interactions with the sick, and reports of public demonstrations of cures. Papers might call on artistic representations of medical practitioners and healers, on scientific treatises and their illustrations, or on saints' lives, histories and other popular literature.
