'Dis-ease with Post-modern Anthropology: anthropologists facing towards
the 21st century'
Anxiety is widespread within Anthropology over the nature and
contribution of the discipline in a post-modern era at the beginning of
a new century. This 'dis-ease' has manifested itself in a distrust of
the concept of culture, the role of subjectivity and the relationship
between ethnography and ideology. Increasingly, research has adopted a
post-modern turn: evoking experience through multiple voices, prose and
poetry. Perhaps new directions may be found in critical approaches to
post-modernity and post-modernism. This Conference seeks to foster
debate around the nature of current theory by drawing from a variety of
perspectives. Anthropological, social-scientific, philosophical and,
particularly, psychoanalytical and psychological contributions are
welcome. Papers should focus on: (1) subjectivity and post-modernity;
(2) the history of Anthropology; (3) the concept of culture; and, (4)
what is post-modern Anthropology?
