Location: University of Oregon - Eugene
Date: June 17 through August 14, 1999
Description:
The Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) is a nine-week
intensive summer language program -- equivalent to a full academic year of
instruction -- for undergraduates, graduate students, and professionals from
many fields. As demand allows, courses (levels I-III) will be offered in
Burmese, Filipino, Indonesian, Hmong, Javanese, Khmer, Lao, Thai, and
Vietnamese. If enrollments are sufficient, Level IV will be added for
Indonesian, Thai, and Vietnamese.
High-quality language instruction is a SEASSI tradition. First offered at
Ohio University in 1982, the program has since rotated among all of the
relevant area studies programs in the United States. As a national institute
governed by the country's leading Southeast Asian linguists, SEASSI has
become a model, in terms of institutional excellence and member cooperation,
for other intensive summer programs for less-commonly-taught languages.
The University of Oregon is honored to carry on this tradition by hosting
SEASSI in the summers of 1998 and 1999. Students from a wide array of fields
will come to study on Oregon's park-like campus in the heart of the
beautiful Willamette Valley, located only one hour from coastal towns and
beaches and one hour from the top of the Cascade mountain range. This
setting is ideal for an intensive nine-weeks of language training.
Other opportunities include area-studies courses taught by internationally
noted scholars and professionals, a graduate student conference, the COTSEAL
language conference, the Indonesian Studies Conference, a film series, a
lecture series, cultural activities, and
site-seeing in Oregon.
Next summer, SEASSI will be held at the University of Oregon's Eugene campus
from June 17 through August 14, 1999. For more information, please refer to
