Description: The 2nd Annual Eisenhower Academy: An Institute for Middle and
Secondary School Teachers, August 1 – 6, 1999 will be held at Gettysburg
College, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
Many Middle and High School students know little of the Eisenhower presidential
years. This institute will provide immersion in the 1950’s to stimulate and
involve teachers to make the era come alive for their students.
Participants in the institute will have a variety of hands on learning
experiences. They will visit the Eisenhower National Historic Site and see
first hand how the Park is used as a classroom. They will see primary
resources presented by the Johns Hopkins University - The Eisenhower Papers
Project. They will use the Gettysburg College Library Special Collections and
computer labs to access their interest and learn about Eisenhower sites on the
Internet. Participants will hear from Eisenhower era people that knew the
Eisenhower. They will experience the visual archives of the era through still
and motion pictures. Participants will be exposed to leading historians of the
era. Instructors will use class discussion, audio and visual aids, charts and
handouts to illustrate and demonstrate points.

University, The Papers of Dwight D. Eisenhower; historian Susan Eisenhower;
Dr. David Schuyler, Franklin & Marshall College; Dr. Raymond J. Saulnier,
Chairman Economic Advisors 1956 – 1960; Dr. Robert Preston, Mount Saint
Mary’s College; and Dr. George Colburn, historian / producer The Eisenhower Era
Project; Carol A. Hegeman, Supervisory Historian, Eisenhower NHS.
The Academy will include: field trips, lectures, and discussion on the 1950’s
including the Cold War, civil rights, and popular culture. A visit to the
Eisenhower National Historic Site is included to get an intimate glimpse into
the Eisenhower’s life and times. The weeklong institute will be held at
Gettysburg College and the price includes meals, lodging, seminars, document
package, and special evening events. Double occupancy $375 per person or $410
for single occupancy. Class size is limited.
