The University of Rhode Island Department of English presents....
The First Annual URI Conference on English Studies
THE USES OF POPULAR CULTURE
This conference has been established to explore how the academic community
uses popular culture to inform, understand, teach, and articulate the literary
canon. While the conference is not a discussion of popular culture itself, it
does deign to examine how popular culture can affect and has affected literary
studies, and how those who study literature and critical theory incorporate
notions arising out of popular culture into their work. Papers could include
discussions of film or musical versions of canon work, exploring how to use
popular culture in a teaching environment, the popular culture of any given
era and how that culture has survived and adapted in the modern era, or any
other topic that combines popular culture and literary studies.
