Location: Rochester, New York
Conference Dates: June 4-6, 1999
I would like to organize a panel for the 1999 Berkshire Conference
on the History of Women, to be held in Rochester, New York, June
4-6, 1999. I seek at least one co-panelist, and someone to comment &/or
chair the panel, which will be based on the theme of "sexual
revolution" in international perspective, for the 19th and
20th centuries.
My own paper will focus on the period of Radical Reconstruction
follwoing the American Civil War. Amidst the social and civil
turmoil of the period emerged a media feeding frenzy concerning
heightened sexual activities. It is worth exploring on a wider
scale what kinds of forces combine to produce a period of
sexual revolution, whether the preoccupation with sexuality
reflects actual changes in sexual practices, or is in fact
a metaphor for other kinds of political change, or some
combination of the two. For this reason I welcome papers
and panelists studying comparable cases in quite distinct
national and temporal settings.
