A conference to be held at the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.
Friday 10 - Monday 13 September 1999
The conference is to be hosted jointly by the English and African
Literature Departments in association with The Graduate School for
the Humanities & Social Sciences, at the University of the
Witwatersrand. Our conference seeks to draw academics, post-graduate
students and authors from a variety of fields in South Africa and
other parts of the African continent as well as from the Indian
sub-continent, and the rest of the world. The conference aims:
* To explore and extend debates current in postcolonial studies;
* To examine debates around literature, language and theory in the
Indian sub-continent;
* To set up and strengthen a network of academics and authors across
the Indian Ocean as part of a broader South/South dialogue;
* To refine our intellectual and pedagogic practices in the light of
these exchanges;
* To honour the contribution of Es'kia Mphahlele to South
African/World literature.
