Joe Ferreira
Candidate Statement
My affiliation with H-Net began as a subscriber to the then newest addition to the lists, H-High-S. The potential for an on-going forum for pedagogical and field specialization exchanges was an attractive draw for me, a teacher with limited access to professional conferences and fairly new access to some of the technologies that made long- distance Internet communications available. Within two years, I had become so involved in discussions and exchanges that, when the post of Review Editor became available, the then-list moderators Lou Garaventa, Matthew Hermann and current senior editor Don Adams approached me with the request to join the H-High-S staff. Since then I have served as Co-Editor of H-High-S, chair of the old Elections Committee, at-large member of the H-Net Council and, for the past two years, editor of HNET-STAFF. During this time of service, I have seen H-Net expand not only in terms of adding new networks to address the numerous and varied disciplines and fields of subscribers and affiliated organizations but in a variety of approaches to promoting better and more in-depth communications between scholars, grad students, NGO staffers and others interested in the varied social sciences and humanities represented within H-Net.
The past two years have seen H-Net mature as it grows. We have seen the technology alter the way we communicate as professionals and new possibilities for incorporating new technologies into our work arise. As communications with the members of HNET-STAFF is the bulk of my portfolio, I am hoping to continue the discussions that have begun that contemplate moving H-Net into a position to make use of these new communications forums, including blogs and wikis, as well as to continue to promote better exchanges between pre-collegiate and collegiate subscribers. The future of H-Net is intriguing and promising and there is much work to be done to keep H-Net the viable resource it has become for all of its subscribers. There is also much work to be done helping H-Net's incredible number of dedicated, supportive and hard-working editors realize professional benefits from their work with the organization. I hope, during the course of this next term of office, to help make that recognition a reality. I thank everyone who has supported my candidacy for re-election and it is my intent to justify that support during the next two years.
