Events from the 2008 Conference
The 2008 annual meeting of the Southwest Texas Popular/American Culture Association was once again successful as we met in Albuquerque, New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment.

2008 Conference Highlights included the following:

  • Keynote Speaker: Joy Harjo
    Joy Harjo is an internationally known poet, performer, writer and musician of the Mvskoke/Creek Nation. She has published seven books of acclaimed poetry including She Had Some Horses, In Mad Love and War, The Woman Who Fell from the Sky, and her most recent How We Became Human: New and Selected Poems from W.W. Norton.

    Joy Harjo
    Among her many awards are the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writers Circle of the Americas, the Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Award, the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, and the William Carlos Williams Award from the Poetry Society.

  • “Early Bird” online registration with over 1,100 people participating.

  • For 2008, we added twelve new exciting subject areas, increasing our focus on cutting edge Popular/American culture studies.

  • AV support for 2008 included wireless computer access in Phil's Cyber Café, and by popular demand, each presentation room was equipped with the following:
    LCD Projector - PowerPoint Friendly
    DVD/VCR Combo Player
    Set of Stereo Speakers
    Large Projection Screen
