As some of you will already know, I published my book, "Man Failure: The Story of New Jersey's Deadliest Train Wreck," in 2017, telling the story of the February 6, 1951 Woodbridge train wreck. A Pennsylvania Railroad express passenger train known as The Broker had derailed by the Turnpike construction site, resulting in the deadliest in state history with 85 dead and hundreds injured. An expanded second edition was released in 2021 for the 70th anniversary.
Early in 2023, I was contacted by Steven Schwankert, a distant relative through marriage of The Broker's engineer, Joseph Fitzsimmons
In partnership with the New Jersey Studies Academic Alliance (NJSAA) annual awards program, the Richard P. McCormick Prize is given every year to the author of an outstanding scholarly book on New Jersey history.
The work must have been published this year (2024) or in the previous two calendar years: 2022 to 2024. Due to suspension of 2023 awards, books published late in 2021 that were not considered in 2022 will also be considered. There is no in-state residency requirement for authors/editors/compilers.
