PROJECTS

Over the years FIDA has undertaken a lot of projects which have gone a long way to help the Ghanaian woman achieve a lot of empowerment in various aspects of her life.

The creation of Legal Aid Clinics as far back as 1985 was the first step in achieving this goal.

Every year FIDA organises Legal Aid Clinics in the different regions of the country where it does not have permanent centres. This is to give legal literacy to the women and children in those areas and make them aware of their rights, priviliges and obligations under the Law.

With funding from some International Organisations FIDA was able to create an awareness as to the plight of old women in the Northern Region of Ghana who were ostracised from Society and kept in camps as they were thought of as being witches. With the help of FIDA these women were freed from these camps.

Trokosi is a system in some parts of Ghana where virgin young girls are given as sacrifices to the gods as compensation for crimes committed by their ancestors. These young girls are all kept in camps by priests who ultimately abuse them sexually and pschologically. FIDA Ghana was very instrumental in bringing to light the plight of these young girls and played a very crucial role in parliament criminalising this practice.

FIDA has also undertaken projects on Women In Agriculture in Ghana and this has helped greatly in serving as a source for research for many organisations in Ghana.

In recent times FIDA has been instrumental in the sensitisation of women in the Police Force as to gender sensitivity.

Domestic Violence is an issue in Ghana which though prevalent is rarely talked about. Fida has embarked on an active campaign to create an awareness in society that this practice is a violation of the rights of women. FIDA has come out with a handbook which is to help parliament in the passage of a law criminalising domestic violence.

In the recent Presidential and Parliamentary elections of December 2000,FIDA played a very vital role in organising workshops and seminars for the women candidates and educating them on various ways to go about their campaigns and how to raise funds to enable them get ahead.

FIDA Ghana is constantly embarking on new projects and these will be listed on this site as and wehn these projects are undertaken.
