To friends and colleagues:

We at Michigan State have the sadness to tell you of the death of Mouhammed Moustapha Kane, Maitre assistant of the Universite Cheikh Anta Diop, on September 12, 1995 of a viral hepatitis contracted, as best we know, after a period of intensive political campaigning in the Fleuve region of Senegal this past July. He was a student at MSU from 1980 on, and received his PhD in 1987 for a dissertation on the History of Futa Toro during the early colonial period, 1890-1920. Since that time he had been teaching at the university in Dakar, except for a brief stint teaching here in 1991. He published THE ISLAMIC REGIME OF FUUTA TOORO with me in 1984 (a collection of texts in Pulaar and English) and a number of articles, most recently in the Cahiers d'Etudes Africaines special edition on the Fulbe and in Islam et Societes.

He is survived by his wife Marema, and 4 children. Those wishing to communicate to the family may write to his brother,

I am sorry to learn of Mouhammed Kane's death. Although we never met, his name was most familiar to us Africanists through a series of his publications.

May his soul rest in peace!!!
